The Spectrum Health Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) Clinic is a nationally recognized Center of Excellence by the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Association (HCMA). HCM is the most common single genetic cardiovascular disorder, affecting up to 1 in 200 people – possibly 2,000-4,000 patients in West Michigan. It can affect people at any age, potentially causing heart failure, stroke or even sudden cardiac death. The diagnosis in one family member also triggers screening for other family members, which require genetic testing and a significant amount of counseling. HCM is a complex disease requiring a multidisciplinary team including pediatric and adult cardiology, advanced imaging, interventional, electrophysiology, cardiac surgery, genetics, and social work.Your support can fill the need for ongoing education and support groups, outreach events targeting HCM patients and families, and research.
